MANILA, (PIA) — The historic Walled City of Intramuros is again vying for the prestigious World Travel Awards as Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2025.
The iconic tourism site of Intramuros honors the Philippines’ glorious past. For four hundred years, Intramuros has been a priceless heritage of the City of Manila and a major historical landmark of the Philippines.
The UNESCO World Heritage Convention describes Intramuros as the Historic Center of Manila with various layers of significance as a witness to the transformative social, historical, economic, religious, and political events of the national capital, and in general of the Philippines, which is is a result of the intersection Asian, European, and American cultures – being the locus of trade relations and as an area of competition among peoples in the Western Pacific continents.
Its value lies in its being an enduring witness to the confluence of trade relations and cultures of several races of peoples.
For this year’s World Travel Awards, Intramuros is up against the Angkor Temples of Cambodia; Borobudur in Indonesia; Great Wall of China; Ha Long Bay in Vietnam; Sengan-en and Shoko Shuseikan Museum in Kagoshima, Japan; Taj Mahal in India; teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.COM in Japan; teamLab SuperNature Macao, China; Terracotta Warriors, China; The Forbidden City, China; Tokyo Imperial Palace, Japan; and Victoria Palace in Hong Kong.
In 2024, Intramuros emerged as Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the 31st Annual World Travel Awards (WTA).
Likewise, the historic walled city was hailed as Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2016, 2020, and 2022 and was also hailed as the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction in 2020.
Intramuros Administration Administrator Joan Padilla previously said the accolades are a testament to the collective efforts of those who have contributed to the rich history and cultural significance of the Walled City.
She added that the Intramuros Administration remains committed to providing unforgettable experiences for visitors from around the globe and preserving Intramuros as a premier tourist destination for years to come.
The World Travel Awards (WTA) was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward, and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry.
WTA brand is recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.
Each year, the award covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to recognize and celebrate individual and collective success within each key geographical region.
This year’s winners will be feted at the landmark Exhibition World Bahrain on December 9, bringing together global travel and tourism leaders to recognize and celebrate the industry’s best of the best.
