Iodine Global Network and Salinas Foods Inc. introduces ThyroMobile in Puerto Princesa

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA) — The Iodine Global Network (IGN) and Salinas Foods Inc. (SFI) introduced ThyroMobile in Puerto Princesa on August 15.

The IGN and SFI are the proponents of the ThyroMobile, a vehicle that seeks to enhance thyroid health care delivery system to vulnerable communities afflicted with iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) primarily goiter.

IGN National Coordinator Dr. Teofilo O.L. San Luis, Jr. said that Palawan is one of the 15 provinces in the country afflicted with iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) according to the 2019 National Nutrition Surveys conducted by the DOST Food & Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI).

The launching of the ThyroMobile was conducted at the ACE Medical Center Palawan located in Brgy. San Pedro where the group conducted capacity-building to health care and allied professionals in Puerto Princesa and Palawan as target audiences.

They also provided thyroid diagnostic procedures (neck ultrasound, TSH & FT4 blood tests, urinary iodine concentration) and quantitative household salt testing for iodine for free.

These activities will generate information on the status of IDD among women of reproductive age (WRA), especially pregnant and lactating women (PLW).

Dr. San Luis also said that the launching of ThyroMobile is an excellent opportunity for the Puerto Princesa City Government and the Provincial Local Government Unit to network together with the IGN and SFI to achieve desired ends in promoting thyroidal health with its impact not only on women but more so on the children that they would bear during pregnancy and lactation.
