Isabela City marks World Day Against Child Labor

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) –In observance of the 2024 World Day Against Child Labor, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) – Isabela City Field Office, in partnership with the Isabela City Information Office, staged a special program recently to raise awareness and promote the rights of child laborers.

A total of 40 child laborers from the city joined the event held at the Maligue Covered Court, where they were oriented on their rights to education, safety, and a happy childhood. The program aimed to provide these young individuals with a chance to learn about their entitlements and empowerment.

As part of the celebration, the DOLE distributed gift assistance to the profiled child laborers along with their families. The City Information Office also introduced a Mobile Library, which provided access to books and educational materials for the children.

The event was filled with short activities and rewards for the child laborers, who were also treated to refreshments and snacks. The program aimed to not only educate them about their rights but also provide a fun and engaging experience.

Marlyn M. Anoos, chief labor and employment officer of DOLE Isabela City acknowledged the attendance of child laborers and urged their families to prioritize their education over hazardous jobs.

She emphasized the significance of education in securing a better future for the children. She also underscored the availability of programs from various agencies offering education and career opportunities to help children explore their employment interests. She also extended her gratitude to the sponsors and stakeholders who contributed to the gift-giving assistance provided to the children.

Meaanwhile, representatives from other stakeholders and partner agencies, including those from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the barangay officials from Maligue Barangay, expressed their messages of support and gratitude for being included as stakeholders in the celebration. They also shared their common objectives, emphasizing the importance of encouraging both parents and children to reduce child labor and focus on children’s education and overall well-being.

The World Day Against Child Labor is observed every year on June 12 to raise awareness about the issue of child labor and promote efforts to eliminate it worldwide. The event is led by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in partnership with governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.

The Isabela City government has been actively participating in the campaign against child labor and has implemented various programs and initiatives to prevent child labor and promote education for all. The city’s efforts have been recognized by the national government, which has praised its commitment to eradicating child labor.

Through events like this, the DOLE and city government and other stakeholders continues to demonstrate its commitment to promoting the welfare of its citizens, particularly its children, and ensuring that they have access to quality education and a brighter future.
