Isabela City people’s council lauds passage of people empowerment ordinance

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – The Isabela City People’s Council lauded the passage of the People Empowerment Ordinance No. 25-808 after it was signed by Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman on March 5.

This ordinance is designed to amplify the voices of citizens in local governance, emphasizing that a vibrant, engaged citizenry is essential for fostering sustainable and inclusive development.

Ronald Paulino, President of the Isabela City People’s Council, expressed gratitude for the tangible progress in participatory governance.

“What once seemed like a distant dream is now a reality through our participation and support for our city government,” he affirmed, reiterating the People’s Council’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive decision-making.

Pedrito Eisma, City Administrator in his remarks during the signing ceremony, emphasized reinforcing the ordinance’s vital role in empowering citizens to exert their rights and influence key decisions that affect their communities.

“We have to continue and push forward because the authority of our elected officials comes from us. Our goal is to strengthen our ranks,” he stated, highlighting the need for continued engagement from community stakeholders.

As the principal author of the ordinance, Councilor James Abner Rodriguez highlighted its significance as a watershed moment for the city. He described the ordinance as not merely legislation but a vibrant movement, symbolizing the collective strength of citizens working hand-in-hand with local government.

“This ordinance stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, the strength of the community, and the unwavering belief in our people’s capacity to shape their own destiny,” he said.

Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman in his message, expressed heartfelt appreciation for those who contributed to the ordinance, emphasizing that governance should be a shared responsibility.

“This is the time when your local government is giving back the power to the people. Our dream is that governance will one day transcend individual names and be founded on the collective strength of our community,” she expressed, envisioning a future where local governance is deeply rooted in collective community involvement.

Furthermore, Mayor Turabin-Hataman urged civil society organizations to actively engage with the local government, submitting proposals for projects and initiatives.
