ISAT U alumnus wins prestigious national terno-making tilt

ILOILO CITY (PIA) — An alumnus and part-time faculty member of the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U) won the prestigious national terno-making competition jointly organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and BENCH/Suyen Corporation.

Peter Gagula, known professionally as Peach Garde, emerged the top winner among the 12 finalists during the cultural show, which culminated in the TernoCon 2025 held on January 25.

TernoCon is a national convention and competition participated in by Filipino designers.

Garde’s winning collection masterfully interpreted 20th-century Philippine visual arts through three distinct pieces: a formal terno with panuelo, a formal Balintawak with alampay and tapis, and formal Kimona featuring butterfly sleeves with alampay and patadyong.

ISAT-U President Dr. Gabriel M. Salistre said this achievement not only honors ISAT U but also showcases Ilonggo excellence in preserving and innovating Philippine traditional fashion.

“Mr. Garde’s victory reflects our university’s commitment to nurturing creative talents who contribute to our cultural heritage,” said Salistre.

This year, the competition began with an intensive two-day lecture featuring renowned fashion authorities, including Gino Gonzales, multi-disciplinary artist Mark Lewis Lim Higgins, and chief curator Ma. Victoria “Boots” Herrera.

Participants were challenged to create collections that honored the intricate movements, perspectives, and principles seen in Philippine paintings, architecture and sculptures.

Garde’s winning collection will join the ranks of celebrated works, including those by 2023 winner Yssa Inumerable, in showcasing the evolution of the Philippine terno, according to a press report from ISAT U. (AAL/LAF/PIA6-Iloilo)
