Islanders get DSWD ‘Kristine’ aid

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development 6 has dispatched 361 Family Food Packs worth P330,674.80 as part of the agency’s disaster response operations on Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami) – affected areas in Roxas City.

The distribution of these FFPs were facilitated and led by Roxas City mayor Ronnie Dadivas last Oct. 23.“While the weather is still calm, we initiated the transport of the assistance from the DSWD to the city’s island barangay of Olotayan to make sure that the islanders will not go hungry,” the mayor said in Hiligaynon in a social media post.

He added that the livelihood of Olotayan residents, mainly on fishing, is affected because of STS Kristine.

Dadivas also led the distribution of the food packs to Kristine-affected city residents in the evacuation centers of Brgys. Barra, Baybay, and Dumolog.

The DSWD’s assistance in Roxas City formed part of the P1.6-million worth of goods released in Western Visayas – affected areas based on the agency’s Oct. 23, 2024 late afternoon Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communication (DROMIC) report.

“We recognize the fast action of our staff as well as those from the LGUs. We see the prepositioning of food packs to be very helpful because it makes the withdrawal of goods faster and easier. Goods are strategically located already in different sites in the region,” said DSWD 6 Officer-in-Charge Arwin O. Razo.

Aside from Roxas City, the DSWD has also released goods to affected families in Batad, Iloilo, P52,170; Cadiz, Negros Occidental, P370, 880; Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, 11,590; and Bacolod City, P74,420.

In a news release, the agency also continues to receive reports from the LGUs to dispatch needed resource augmentation.

It has a total of P147.2 million-worth of standby fund and stockpile to respond to the situation the inclement weather may further cause in the region.
