Jail activities up to raise support to PDL’s rehab, reformation

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) – Series of activities have been lined up to raise public awareness on the importance of providing support to the rehabilitation and reformation program of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

Led by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Regional Office MIMAROPA, various activities are set for the 30th National Correctional Consciousness Week (NACOCOW) in the region.

This year’s theme is “Makataong Pakikitungo, Matinong Pamumuno at Matatag na Prinsipyo Tungo sa Maunlad na Serbisyong Pampiitan,” BJMP MIMAROPA Information Officer Joefrie Anglo said.

He said that included in the week-long event set on October 21 to 27 are literacy program, medical and dental outreach mission, legal consultation and counseling, spiritual enrichment, cultural and sports festivals, among others.

There are other expected activities during the celebration like exhibit and bazaars of PDL livelihood products, painting, literary sessions, he added.

On the other hand, BJMP MIMAROPA Regional Director Clarence Mayangao said that the celebration seeks to raise awareness to both private and public sectors of society as an essential component of the rehabilitation and reformations of those confined in the jails of the region.

“There are various programs advocating for positive change and development of persons deprived of liberty, including literacy program, medical and dental outreach mission, legal consultation and counseling by the Public Attorney’s Office, spiritual enrichment, cultural and sports festivals and the like,”  Mayangao added.

Meanwhile, all BJMP personnel assigned in the district, municipal and city jails are reporting [to jail facility] to help safeguard at least 2,130 PDLs in the Southwestern Tagalog Region.

Anglo said that the Special Tactics and Response Team of  BJMP MIMAROPA is also ready to assist the jails in case of any incidents or occurrences.

BJMP is manning 19 jail facilities in the island provinces of Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, he said. (JBG/PIA MIMAROPA/With story and photos from BJMP MIMAROPA)
