JCI Kagayhaan Gold advocates for rabies education, treatment

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — Maintaining progress in eradicating rabies in the community, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kagayhaan Gold discussed their “End Rabies Now” campaign during the Lambo Dyes radio program on July 12.

As part of their animal welfare program, Local Organization President Bryan Lucky Noble and Executive Vice President Dr. Grant Amoncio shared that the organization is currently focusing on the aforementioned campaign. This campaign emphasizes the importance of education and information dissemination in the community regarding the proper management and treatment of rabies victims.

Karon, we’ll focus on “End Rabies Now,” kay murag nagkadaghan na pud atong nakita sa mga social media nato, kanang mga napaakan nga dili musaba sa ilahang mga parents or dili kaya sa ilahang pamilya na napaakan sila, so dili pud sila matagaan og saktong treatment at some point, or management, kay wala man gyud siyay treatment pag ma-positive na ka sa rabies,” said Amoncio.

(Right now, we’ll focus on “End Rabies Now” due to an increase in social media cases where people have been bitten but have not informed their parents or family, which prevents them from receiving proper treatment or management because there is no treatment once you are positive for rabies.)

He also emphasized that having more dogs and cats raises the risk of receiving bites or scratches, as well as the risk of developing rabies.

The doctor added that rabies primarily targets the nervous system, with the symptoms typically manifesting after 21 to 24 days.

Kani siyang rabies man gud, kaya ni nato ma-prevent 100 percent. Though fatal ni siya nga sakit, pero 100 percent preventable, which means na pag mapaakan, naa ta’y bakuna,” said Amoncio.

(We can prevent rabies 100 percent. Though it is a fatal illness, it is still 100 percent preventable, which means that if someone gets bitten, we have vaccines.)

Amoncio added that individuals may seek treatment at the Animal Bite Treatment Center, J.R. Borja Hospital, or Madonna Hospital. (LREMS/PJSF/PIA-10)
