Mark Joseph A. Gariando, 24, a job seeker, was hired for a human resource position at the World Café of Opportunities Job Fair on August 29. He was one of 64 applicants hired on the spot.
The job fair provided employment services from 20 government agencies and private institutions nationwide.
Various positions, such as carpenters, administrative assistants, sales associates, caregivers, financial advisors, and electricians, are available.
Born as an only child, Gariando believed that he needed to work twice as hard as his widowed mother to cover the bills and daily expenses.
At first, I had low expectations since there were a lot of us here to apply. Yet the fact that I was unemployed for months, and suddenly a company sees my potential really helped me boost hope and self-esteem, and I am grateful,” Gariando said.
At the job fair, applicants such as Gariando were required to complete a registration form upon arrival, submit their résumé to specific employer booths, and participate in interviews.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) spearheaded the event in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), and Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU).
The uniqueness of this job fair is because of the tri-focalized education, catering to learners of different ages, status, and those who are out-of-school youth, to develop life-long skills for them to be productive citizens,” said TESDA Leyte Provincial Director Vivian E. Abueva.
According to TESDA, 496 individuals applied, and 30 were considered for employment after undergoing a qualifying examination with the company to which they applied.
The event ensures that job applications will be considered without discrimination, creating equal opportunities for all applicants. (AAC/JKPA, PIA Leyte)
