Kalinga LGUs show preparedness in responding to ‘Nika’

TABUK CITY, Kalinga (PIA) — Local government units (LGUs) in Kalinga actively responded to the impact of Typhoon Nika, ensuring the safe evacuation of affected families, distribution of food packs and immediate clearing of roads from landslides and fallen trees.

Kalinga province was placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 early Monday as Typhoon Nika traversed the Cordillera bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall on Monday, (Nov. 11, 2024).

Fortunately, no untoward incident happened during the typhoon’s onslaught LGU officials, Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils, the police, and other government agency personnel in the province conducted continuous monitoring and evacuation efforts throughout the day.

They also distributed food packs to affected families and worked tirelessly to clear landslides and restore road access amid the storm.

As of 8 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 12), the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported 453 families or a total of 1,266 individuals were evacuated due to threat of flooding.

Evacuees temporarily stayed with relatives or in evacuation centers within their barangays.

Immediate assistance including food, water, and other essential supplies were provided by their respective LGUs.

The PDRRMC also initially reported an estimated P37.5 million damages in infrastructure, mainly roads and buildings.

Initial data on damages on agricultural crops show P1.6 million to rice crops and about P104,100 in corn.

Approximately P9.5 million has also been recorded in damages to irrigation systems, affecting an estimated 190 hectares of farmland. (JDP/Rod Asurin-PIA Kalinga)
