Kanlaon eruption-affected rise to 9,046 families

NEGROS OCCIDENAL (PIA) — The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon early this June has now affected a total of 9,046 families or 27,596 individuals in 18 barangays in the province, a report from the Department of Social Welfare and Development 6 (DSWD) showed.

As of June 15, 10:00 pm, there are 833 families or 2,823 persons currently taking shelter in five evacuation centers in Negros Occidental.

Among the displaced population inside evacuation centers are pregnant women lactating mothers, unaccompanied minors and persons with disabilities, solo, parents, and Indigenous People.

There are 20 families which are temporarily staying with their relatives or friends while the total displaced population is now 836 families or 2,871 displaced persons.

The Department released a total of 3,334 family food packs amounting to P1,938,100.00; 3,080 non-food items composed of hygiene kits, sleeping kits and family kits amounting to P3,653,198 to the affected families in LGUs of Bago City, La Castellana, La Carlota City, and Pontevedra.

Meanwhile, financial assistance was provided to 1,598 individuals amounting to P15,980,000.

The DSWD has 16,017 prepositioned family foodpacks in 25 strategic locations in Western Visayas and 41,971 non-food items at the regional warehouse and other centers.

The DSWD Field Office 6 said it convened a meeting with the Social Welfare and Development- Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (SWAD-AICS) Iloilo and Bacolod City to spot the needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) for social protection while on June 12, the department organized IDP Camp support team to facilitate the construction of temporary bathing areas in the town of La Castellana.
