La Niña conditions continue to weaken; transition to ENSO-neutral expected

MANILA, (PIA) — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration of the Department of Science and Technology (PAGASA) reported that La Niña conditions are weakening in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, with a shift anticipated toward El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-neutral conditions in the coming weeks.

In a statement approved by PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando, the weather bureau said recent climate monitoring indicates that sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) are returning to neutral levels, a trend expected to persist through the September-October-November 2025 season.

As a result, the La Niña-like patterns of above-normal rainfall affecting parts of Luzon, most of Bicol, eastern Visayas, and northeastern Mindanao are not likely to continue.

PAGASA also warned that with the imminent end of the northeast monsoon and the onset of the warm and dry season, the public and relevant government agencies should maintain precautionary measures. These include minimizing heat stress, optimizing water usage for personal and domestic needs, and addressing health risks associated with the changing climate conditions.

The agency will continue to monitor significant climate developments and provide updates as necessary.
