SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union—In the wake of Super Typhoon Carina, the provincial government of La Union is working tirelessly to provide aid and shelter to thousands of affected residents.
Clearing operations by the provincial government of La Union, through its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), led to the opening of Balecbec-Basca and the Naguilian-Caba roads for people and motorists on July 25.
Around 127 families were also safely evacuated in Luna town, the largest number of evacuated families in the whole province on the same day.
Relief assistance provided to the said beneficiaries includes food, water, clothes, hygiene kits, medicine, and a temporary shelter for them to stay in while waiting for flooding to subside.
Evacuation efforts were also done in the municipalities of Agoo, Bauang, Caba, Bangar, Balaoan, and San Fernando City, safely transferring around 204 total families to evacuation centers within the said municipalities.
The 11:00 a.m. bulletin of the La Union PDRRMO also shows that 1,000 relief packs were distributed to the municipality of Luna, while 350 relief packs were distributed in Bangar town.
Governor Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David tasked the PDRRMO with conducting comprehensive roving inspections with city and municipal counterparts to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of La Union residents.
“We are closely working with the local government units, emergency response teams, and community leaders to ensure that we have a well-coordinated response and relief strategy in place,” Ortega-David said.
Beth Relano, a resident of Luna, meanwhile, explained that more than the relief items they received, it was the effort of government workers to reach them and see their situation that they truly appreciated.
“Thank you for your patience in visiting all of us here in Luna. I hope no family or individuals were seriously hurt because of [Super Typhoon] Carina,” Relano said.
According to the PDRRMO, there were 12,637 families, or 44,483 individuals, in 165 barangays across 17 towns in La Union that were affected as of July 26 because of the weather disturbance.
About 220 families, or 597 individuals, are being served inside evacuation centers throughout the province.
The provincial government assured the public of its continued support as the province recovers from the typhoon’s impact. (AMB/CCMT/PIA La Union)
