SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — The La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) has ramped up security measures across the province in preparation for the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day or Undas this year.
With a surge of people expected to travel and visit cemeteries during Undas, the heightened protocols aim to ensure the safety of both locals and visitors.
“We are now on full alert across La Union, deploying 692 police officers to closely monitor cemeteries, major roadways, and set up police assistance centers in each municipality,” stated Police Maj. Lawrence Gañola, officer-in-charge of the Police Community Affairs and Development Unit (PCADU).
These officers will be stationed strategically to maintain order, assist the public, and address any security concerns promptly.
In addition, around 600 force multipliers and advocacy groups will be on hand to assist motorists.
These groups, working alongside the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), will set up booths to offer guidance, distribute safety information, and provide first aid assistance if necessary.
As part of the Philippine National Police’s “Ligtas Undas 2024” initiative, these efforts include enhanced road safety operations, motorist assistance, route security, traffic management, and anti-criminality measures.
Police officers in La Union will focus on ensuring the smooth flow of traffic on main roads, securing transportation hubs, and maintaining peace in public areas such as bus terminals, places of worship, and public markets, where crowds are expected to gather.
In addition to increased police presence, public assistance desks will be set up at key locations to support families visiting cemeteries and to offer information on safety protocols.
These desks will provide directions, handle lost-and-found cases, and connect individuals with emergency services if needed.
The PNP reminds the public to exercise caution, especially those planning long trips.
“For drivers, make sure you are well-rested and that your vehicle is in good condition, especially buses that usually carry large numbers of commuters. Remember, you have family waiting for you,” Gañola stressed.
He also encouraged those planning to travel to ensure that their homes are secured before departure, reducing the risk of break-ins or property damage during their absence.
These comprehensive measures underscore LUPPO’s commitment to maintaining peace, safety, and order during Undas, as families come together to honor their loved ones in a secure environment. (AMB/MJTAB/KCR, PIA La Union)
