SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – In a bid to ensure a peaceful and secure 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE), the Philippine National Police (PNP) presented a total of 440 loose firearms as part of its intensified campaign to reduce election-related violence.
The firearms, consisting of 198 surrendered and 242 deposited units, were showcased during the “Presentation of Deposited and Surrendered Loose Firearms in Support of the NLE 2025” at the Marangal Grandstand, Camp Diego Silang, La Union Police Provincial Office (PPO) here recently.
PCOL Heryl Bruno, provincial director of La Union PPO, emphasized that the initiative highlights the PNP’s proactive approach in fostering public safety and strengthening trust between law enforcement and communities.
By addressing the issue of loose firearms, the PNP aims to reduce the potential for election-related violence and foster public confidence in law enforcement.
The PNP’s ongoing firearm surrender program, including the revitalized “Oplan Katok” and firearm licensing caravans, encourages citizens to voluntarily surrender or deposit firearms for safekeeping.
The surrendered firearms are turned over to the Regional Civil Security Unit (RCSU) for processing.
Bruno emphasized the importance of this effort, stating, “The surrender and deposit of these firearms represent a vital step in securing our communities and ensuring a peaceful 2025 election.”
PBGEN Lou Evangelista, regional director of the Police Regional Office 1, also highlighted the collaborative efforts, noting, “The success of this initiative depends on the cooperation of every Filipino. Together, we can ensure a safe environment where all citizens can freely and safely exercise their right to vote.”
PBGEN Evangelista further assured the public. “As we prepare for the 2025 elections, we ask for your continued cooperation in ensuring the safety of our nation. Your support in surrendering loose firearms helps us build a more secure environment for everyone. We remain committed to ensuring that this election will be peaceful and free from violence, with the collaboration of our law enforcement agencies and the community.”
The PNP will continue monitoring and expanding its firearm surrender initiatives across Region 1, including ongoing firearm licensing caravans.
These efforts will bring services closer to communities, making it easier for firearm owners to comply with regulations and contributing to the overall safety of the election process. (AMB/AIHR/PIA Region 1)
