SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — Senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), Indigenous Peoples (IPs), solo parents, and other vulnerable groups from various barangays of this city received early Christmas gifts and other assistance through the Provincial Government of La Union’s (PGLU) “Paskuhang Bayan” initiative on Dec. 16.
The “Paskuhang Bayan,” a flagship program of the province, aims to spread Christmas cheer and support to families in need across La Union.
A total of 600 beneficiaries, including members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), received Noche Buena packages.
The event also featured activities and games such as a raffle draw that brought smiles and additional items to select attendees.
La Union Governor Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David expressed her desire to foster unity and compassion by enjoining them as one family through the gift-giving activity.
“This initiative serves as a beacon of hope, bringing joy and support to PWDs, senior citizens, solo parents, indigenous peoples, and 4Ps members this holiday season. By lighting up the hearts of communities across all 20 LGUs before Christmas, it reflects the true spirit of compassion and unity,” Ortega-David said.
Ortega-David adds that the provincial government aims for the event to inspire and bring the gift of a brighter, more meaningful Christmas to La Union residents.
San Fernando City served as the first stop of the province-wide gift-giving program, with stops in the towns of San Juan and Bacnotan on the same day.
Beneficiaries also had access to free services, including medical and dental check-ups, job assistance, legal consultations, real property assistance, financial aid applications, veterinary services, and free seedlings.
For senior citizen Mario Quimilig, the event was more than just a gift-giving activity but a recognition of the need to help vulnerable sectors in La Union.
“This gift is more than just a package. It’s a reminder that we are seen and cared for. It makes this Christmas even more meaningful for us,” he shared.
Arceli Dumaguin, a beneficiary of the 4Ps, meanwhile expressed her heartfelt gratitude after receiving a noche buena package from the local government.
Dumaguin added that the assistance brought joy and relief to her family, allowing them to celebrate Christmas despite their financial challenges.
“This package gives us the reason to celebrate Christmas as a family, complete and happy. It reminds us that we are not alone and that there are people who care for us,” Dumaguin shared.
The provincial government also offered various services, such as free medical and dental services, job assistance, free legal advice, real property assistance, financial assistance applications, free veterinary services, and free seedlings.
With its wide reach, the “Paskuhang Bayan” initiative embodies the spirit of the season, fostering a sense of community and generosity across La Union. (CCMT/KJCR, PIA La Union)
