La Union’s state U prepares photo exhibit to highlight local history, heritage

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA)—Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-Open University System (DMMMSU-OUS) in San Gabriel, La Union, has prepared various activities to celebrate its 44th founding anniversary in January 2025.

One of these is the “Lam-Ang Photo Walk,” a project that will culminate in a photo exhibition that aims to immerse participants in the history of the municipality of San Gabriel and Ilocano culture, which includes the epic tale of Lam-Ang, a legendary hero who embodies the values, beliefs, and practices of the region’s people.

Through the art of photography, 19 participants captured the essence of local traditions and everyday life.

“Joining the photo walk was an amazing experience, as this gave me a chance to see everyday scenes in a new way and connect with other artists. I’m looking forward to using this inspiration in my future work,” Rowell Timoteo, a street photographer in the province, said.

In his message, DMMMSU-OUS Executive Director Bernardo Lamadrid explained that the project not only deepens understanding and appreciation of the community’s cultural roots but also supports the creation of the Amburayan Museum, which will be under the Lam-Ang Institute.

“Through the Amburayan Museum, we aim to showcase the rich culture and traditions of IP communities in the province of La Union, specifically Lon-Oy, San Gabriel, through the collated photos of our artists,” Lamadrid said.

The photo walk and exhibit are ways for the university community to have an active role in showcasing the region’s unique heritage and ensuring the local traditions will continue to flourish. (KJCR- PIA La Union)
