LINAMON, Lanao del Norte (PIA) – Members of the Kadoldolan Farmers Association (KFA) in Linamon and the Sustainable Agri-Integrated Farmers Association (SAIFA) in Matungao have expanded their livelihood initiatives under the Department of Agriculture-Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) program by incorporating peanut farming.
DA-SAAD Northern Mindanao introduced peanut production to the existing Integrated Livelihood Project for KFA and SAIFA to strengthen their agricultural activities.
Currently, KFA and SAIFA members produce and market vegetables such as okra, string beans, pechay, eggplant, and white gourd. KFA has also created a value-added product, Spicy Suka Sawsawan, to increase income.
“Dako kayong amoang pasalamat sa SAAD Program sa paghatag sa amoa og mga seeds ug garden tools apil pud sa mga training para mapadaghan pa amo produksyon sa vegetable garden apil pud ning sa mani para amoa pud masulayan pagtanum dinhi sa amoang area ug mahimo kini dugang nga income para sa amoang mga farmer beneficiary,” SAIFA President Hermocilla Generalao said.
(We are truly grateful to the SAAD Program for providing us [vegetable] seeds and garden tools, as well as training which enabled us to increase our vegetable garden production, and now we get to try peanut farming in our locality as an extra source of income for our farmer-beneficiaries)
As part of the DA-SAAD program, KFA received cattle, veterinary drugs, vegetable seeds, garden tools, organic fertilizers, and training on value-added product processing. SAIFA received an abaca stripper, hybrid corn seeds, vegetable seeds, garden tools, urea fertilizer, and capacity-building training.
The DA-SAAD program promotes sustainable agriculture in low-income and remote areas, encouraging farmers to diversify their production of locally viable products with strong market potential. (DA-10/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)
