MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)–The Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, through its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), conducted the first-ever six-day training on urban search and rescue in the province.
The training, which ran from November 5 to 10, was facilitated by the Technical Rescue Specialist Unit (TRSU-Philippines) and participated by emergency responders from the Local DRRM Offices, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine Army, the Mindanao State University-DRRM Office, and the Provincial DRRM Office of Lanao del Sur.
PDRRMO Head Shaminoden Sambitory said they conducted the training to provide emergency responders additional knowledge on how to respond during an emergency in an urban setting.
He emphasized the need to conduct such training, as natural hazards are unpredictable and it is critical to be prepared for disasters.
“We conduct these trainings because it is part of our preparedness activities to capacitate our constituents in times of emergencies, lalo na yung (especially the) natural hazard because we could not predict the onset of those hazards so kailangan maging handa yung mga tao (so people need to be ready),” he said.
During the training, TRSU taught the responders the basic rope techniques and rappelling to rescue the injured or victims from a high area or angle to the safe area.
Responders learned how to respond in the event of a car accident or a collapsed structure and how to extricate injured victims from damaged areas. (JND/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur)
