NUNUNGAN, Lanao del Norte (PIA) — To preserve traditions, foster unity, and stimulate economic growth in the region, the provincial government has officially turned over a newly constructed P5.49-million, two-storey, 300-square-meter Torogan in Barangay Pantar, Nunungan, serving as both a reinforcement of Maranao cultural heritage and a driver for local tourism.
A Torogan is a pre-colonial traditional house of the Maranaos that symbolizes high social status and serves as the residence of sultans and nobility. Built on massive tree trunks, it features a sloping roof, an open interior, and intricate Okir carvings on its panolong (ornamental beams), columns, and walls that showcase Maranao artistry.
With its open interior, the Torogan offers a spacious, unobstructed area without permanent dividers that is a great venue for gatherings, ceremonies, and important discussions.
Boosting local tourism
The project is positioned near Mt. Inayawan Range Natural Park, now recognized as the 53rd ASEAN Heritage Park and the 11th in the Philippines.
Tourism data indicate that there were a total of 72,337 tourist arrivals in Lanao del Norte in 2024, with 72,046 domestic tourists and 291 foreign visitors.
Provincial Board Member Grecille Matalines said the project will strengthen the rich culture of Nunungan and enhance its potential as a premier cultural tourism destination.
“Dako kaayo kini nga achievement. Looking forward, makita nato na ang Torogan, nagpakita sa unity ug peace, nga ato jud ikultibar kanunay nato nga buhaton para sa kinatibuk-an og ingon man sa development,” she said.
(This is a huge achievement. Looking forward, when we see the Torogan, we can see that there is unity and peace, which we should truly cultivate and consistently practice for the greater good and overall development.)
Nunungan Mayor Marcos Mamay expressed gratitude for the project as it will serve as a center for cultural preservation, local enterprise, and tourism promotion. He shared plans to maintain the Torogan as a vibrant hub for showcasing Maranao heritage.
“Sa Torogan natin, sa loob niyan, magkakaroon tayo ng pasalubong center kung saan ilalagay natin lahat ng produkto mula sa municipality of Nunungan upang ma-showcase kung ano ang meron sa ang ating bayan. May part din doon na lalagyan ng museum, knowing for a fact na mayaman sa culture ang municipality ng Nunungan,” he said.
(In our Torogan, inside, we will have a pasalubong center where we will showcase all the products from the municipality of Nunungan, highlighting what our town has to offer. There will also be a section for a museum, recognizing the fact that Nunungan is rich in culture.)
Legacy of unity and heritage
Residents view the Torogan as a symbol of progress and unity, where generations will celebrate and pass down Maranao heritage.

“Nindot kaayo ni. Nagpasalamat mi kay naa ni nga proyekto diri sa Nunungan. Magamit namo ning Torogan kung magtigom-tigom ang mga tao,” he said.
