Lanao Sur candidates commit to uphold peaceful elections

MARAWI CITY (PIA) — Electoral candidates in Lanao del Sur signed a peace covenant on April 15, pledging to uphold election laws and ensure a peaceful, orderly process.

The signing ceremony, held at the Dimaporo Gymnasium at Mindanao State University – Marawi campus, was attended by election officials, military, police, multisectoral groups, and media.

With a Qur’an placed on the table, candidates who signed the agreement vowed to reject violence, intimidation, or any actions that could disrupt the democratic process. They committed to respecting the rights of fellow candidates and voters, adhering to all Commission on Elections rules, and cooperating with law enforcement.

The candidates also pledged not to manipulate election results and to respect the final vote count.

“I’m happy and optimistic about this development—particularly the inclusion of swearing on the Holy Qur’an during the covenant signing,” said Attorney Ray Sumalipao, regional election director.

Sumalipao noted the Maranao people’s deep ties to their customs, traditions, and Islamic principles. He explained that taking an oath on the Qur’an is sacred and carries both spiritual and moral weight, not only for the individual but also for their family, especially if the vow is broken.

Sumalipao said this commitment brings the goal of a peaceful and honest election closer to reality.

After the signing, rival candidates shook hands, embraced, and engaged in friendly conversations.
