Laoag City suffers ₱1.7M agricultural losses due to ‘Carina’, habagat

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) — The city government of Laoag, through its agriculture office, has reported total losses of ₱1,782,446.15 in crops, livestock, and fishery due to the impact of Super Typhoon Carina and enhanced southwest monsoon over the past week.

The bulk of the losses, amounting to ₱1,053,888.15, were incurred by 410 rice farmers and affected 169.83 hectares of farmlands.

Meanwhile, 59 corn farmers lost ₱340,778 worth of crops due to flooding caused by the typhoon.

About ₱253,530 worth of various high-value crops were also damaged, affecting 20 farmers.

Livestock was not spared, with damages estimated at ₱20,000 with 23 animals affected, impacting seven farmers.

Meanwhile, 31 fisherfolk lost about 41,000 pieces of fingerlings estimated at ₱114,250 due to the heavy rain caused by the typhoon.

According to the final report of the city agriculture office on July 29, a total of 527 farmers and fisherfolk are affected.

Engr. Sheila Marie Opelac, city agriculturist, assured that they will give aid to affected farmers to help recover their losses.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has initially distributed food packs for residents, farmers, and fisherfolk affected.

According to Perlita Cabello, head of the CSWDO, they have prepared 2,700 relief goods ready to be distributed to families impacted by the typhoon.

“We have already given relief packs to six families on July 23 and 26 families on July 25. Initially, there were only four barangays with reported and validated damages, namely Brgy. 7‑B, Nuestra Señora de Natividad, Barit, Santa Cayetana, and Nalbo, but we are continuing the validation so we can distribute to others affected.
