CORTES, Bohol (PIA) — The provincial government is facilitating the setting up of internet connection to some last-mile barangays.
Based on the 2024 data from Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Region 7, Bohol has around 250 barangay halls that do not have communication signals in short messaging systems (SMS) or texting, voice or data connection due to their location being outside the reach of cellular networks.
Of the total, DICT was able to provide internet connection for 29 barangay halls in accessing free Wireless Fidelity (WiFi).
Using the same model adopted by DICT, the provincial government will invest in satellite internet connection for the remote areas.
Also, the provincial government will buy the hardware and other necessary equipment for satellite internet connection for the remote barangays.
In partnership with satellite internet service providers, the communication signal is then passed to the installed local wireless signal receiver in the barangay hall.
The Bohol ICT Office (BICTO) together with DICT will identify the strategic location within the barangay where the equipment for the free internet service will be installed.
Through a resolution requesting the installation of free public internet, a barangay can avail of this program.
The barangay will shoulder the subscription costs of the internet service provider, maintain the internet service, and report to the project management team when an internet connection problem occurs. (RAHC/PIA Bohol)
