ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – Leche Materna Zamboanga, together with the City Health Office, has been at the forefront of promoting breastfeeding awareness and education among first-time mothers and the broader community since 2012.
The organization is dedicated to providing vital information through educational campaigns, targeting not only expectant mothers but also those planning to start a family.

“We play a significant role in spreading awareness about the importance of breastfeeding,” said Juliet Tigo, president of Leche Materna Zamboanga.
“We begin our information drives even before women get married, emphasizing the importance of breastfeeding as they plan for children. Our efforts extend to pregnant women in schools, in partnership with the Department of Education,” she said.
Breastfeeding, according to Tigo, offers numerous benefits, including helping mothers relax, creating a bonding moment with their babies, and serving as the first source of antibodies that protect infants from infections. However, she acknowledged that some mothers struggle with milk production. Leche Materna Zamboanga steps in to provide proper breastfeeding techniques and, when necessary, counseling to address the psychological aspects of breastfeeding.
“Mothers who have questions can reach out to us through our Facebook page, and we’re also available for home visits to support breastfeeding moms,” Tigo explained. “For those in need of additional milk, we assist through the human milk bank at Zamboanga City Medical Center, and we hope to see more establishments for milk banks in the future.”
Leche Materna Zamboanga also supports breastfeeding through local volunteer groups across different barangays. These groups provide hands-on assistance and help eliminate common misconceptions, such as the belief that a mother cannot breastfeed if she is sick or has the flu.
The organization also advocates for workplace support for breastfeeding mothers. As per City Ordinance 377, amended by Ordinance 425 mandates that all establishments must have a lactation station, which will be regularly monitored.
Breastfeeding not only contributes to a child’s development but also offers financial savings compared to formula milk. Leche Materna Zamboanga emphasizes the importance of family support, especially from fathers, in ensuring successful breastfeeding experiences.
“Mommies need family support during the challenging times of breastfeeding,” Tigo emphasized. (EDT/MLE/PIA Region 9-Zamboanga City)
