ZAMBOANGA CITY, Apr 18 (PIA) – The Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC) intensifies the campaign on literacy especially in Zamboanga Peninsula to assure that every child or person is literate and will be able to read and write.
In a Kapihan sa PIA special episode, Marikka Mampusti, Project Development Officer of LCC emphasized that the council was created for the purpose to ensure that there is a body that will provide policy and program directions for all literacy endeavors in the country.
Being the premiere coordinating body in the country that promotes universalization of literacy, the LCC has five program pillars also known as LIYAB, which stands for Likha, Ilaw, Yaman, Aruga, and Buklod.
The LCC is committed in working on the agenda of Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte that aims to take good care of learners by promoting learning well-being, inclusive education, positive learning environment, and to eradicate illiteracy at the city, municipal, and barangay levels through relevant policy issuances and community literacy program interventions.
One of the flagship activities of the council is the National Literacy Awards, a biennial event that aims to recognize best literacy practices carried out by local government units and non-government organizations that help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood opportunity, address welfare needs, promote freedom, and make education facilities accessible, among other.
Further, the NLA has already awarded over 300 local government units who proactively took part in universalizing literacy in their respective cities and municipalities.
The LCC continuously encourages the LGUs, especially in Mindanao and ZamPen to share their best practices and also implement the different programs on literacy campaign which can be acknowledge in the next NLA by year 2024.
LCC is composed of eight members with the Department of Education serving as the chair. Other members of the LCC are the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Philippine Normal University (PNU), House of Representatives (HOR), Senate of the Philippines, and a nongovernment organization representative involved in Literacy Education that is the Education Network (E-Net) Philippines.
LGUs can seek assistance through the different LCC members to implement their different programs. The Council actively maintains its website accessible through www.lcc.deped.gov.ph.
