LPA causes flooding, class suspension in Masbate

MASBATE CITY, Masbate (PIA) – Hours of heavy rain spawned by the trough of a low pressure area (LPA) that has entered the country’s weather monitoring area triggered floods in Masbate province, prompting the suspension of classes and cancellation of flights.

The rain began pouring before midnight Monday and continued to be felt until late Tuesday morning.

The weather disturbance, located east of Mindanao at Tuesday morning, was less likely to develop into a depression within the next 24 hours, according to a morning bulletin issued by the state weather bureau.

However, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Masbate, Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Eastern Visayas, and parts of Eastern Mindanao.

In an announcement, the Department of Education’s Division Office for Masbate province said 16 local government units suspended classes at all levels, citing the incessant rains that the low-pressure area brought.

These were the municipalities of Mobo, Uson, Dimasalang, Palanas, Cataingan, Pio V. Corpus, Cawayan, Placer, Esperanza, Batuan, San Fernando, San Jacinto, Monreal, Milagros, Baleno, and Mandaon.

In a separate memorandum, Masbate City Mayor Socrates Tuason suspended classes in the provincial capital “for the safety and welfare of elementary and high school students.”

Meanwhile, Cebgo cancelled its flights for today amid the threats posed by the bad weather in Masbate.

Cancelled was DG 6177  Manila-Masbate and DG 6178 Masbate-Manila.

No untoward incidents related to the inclement weather were reported in the province. (PIA5/Masbate)
