Maasinhon centenarian gets P130K cash from nat’l, city governments

MAASIN CITY (PIA) — Another centenarian, an individual who reached 100 years old from this city, received a cash gift from the national government under Republic Act 10868, the Centenarian Act of 2016.

She is Sofronia Ramos, a native of Maasin City, residing in Rosario Village, Brgy. Asuncion.

City Mayor Nacional Mercado, accompanied by personnel from the DSWD regional and city offices, personally handed over the cash gift of P100,000 to Ramos at her home on Wednesday, September 27.

In addition, Ramos received P30,000 from the city local government unit, which Mercado also gave, based on a city ordinance granting such cash incentive to honor a long, productive life, and to inspire others.

According to Salvador Valdez, focal person for seniors in the city, Ramos is the lone recipient for this year, while next year another batch is expected to get the same privilege.

The monetary incentives from the national and local levels are also meant to celebrate the rare feat of achieving longevity, of living until reaching such an age, which is widely considered a milestone moment. (LDL/MMP/PIA Southern Leyte with Lorainne Acasio/CIO)
