QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — Mayor Abby Binay announced on Sunday, September 8, that the Makati City government has invested over P8 billion in a program providing free maintenance medications, benefiting 241,604 patients from January to July 2024.
The initiative, which began in 2017 during Binay’s first term, initially served 460,155 Makatizens and saw growth in subsequent years, reaching 621,391 beneficiaries in 2018 and 716,949 in 2019.
The number of beneficiaries dropped during the pandemic, with 389,206 in 2020 and 373,296 in 2021. However, the local government resumed its efforts in 2022, assisting 408,936 patients, and the program rebounded to serve 618,966 beneficiaries in 2023.
“This program aims to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare for Makatizens and their families,” Binay said. “The city’s substantial investment in the free medicine program underscores our commitment to the health and well-being of our community.”
The free medicine initiative covers a wide range of medications, including those for hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol, enlarged prostate, gout, and respiratory issues like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
It also includes treatments for sexually transmitted infections, ulcers, allergies, and gastrointestinal problems, as well as free multivitamins, oral contraceptives, and insulin.
“Our focus has always been accessible healthcare for all,” Binay emphasized. “By ensuring that everyone has access to necessary medications without financial burden, we aim to improve quality of life and reduce preventable diseases, promoting a healthier and more equitable community.”
This free medicines initiative is part of Makati’s comprehensive health strategy, which also includes preventive care, chronic disease management, and emergency medical services, all facilitated through the innovative Yellow Card or Makati Health Plus Program. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
