Malabon advocates circular economy for a greener future

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — In a bid to promote a greener future, the city government of Malabon has partnered with Sentinel Upcycling Technologies to enhance its waste management systems.

Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval recently welcomed members of the Global Plastics Alliance to discuss the city’s vision for sustainable innovation. This collaboration aims to strengthen initiatives that address waste management while promoting the principles of a circular economy.

Our partnership with Sentinel Upcycling Technologies is a significant step towards a sustainable future. By embracing a circular economy, we are not only managing waste effectively but also empowering our communities to participate in creating a cleaner environment for generations to come,” Sandoval said.

A circular economy is defined as a system where materials are continuously reused and regenerated, minimizing waste and resource consumption. It encompasses practices such as maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling, and composting. The model seeks to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment while promoting social equity.

Sentinel Upcycling, a local plastic manufacturer based in Malabon City, is recognized for its innovative approach to processing low-value plastic waste into durable, high-quality recycled products. This partnership underscores Malabon’s commitment to circular economy principles and sustainable solutions.

The company has been actively involved in collecting single-use packaging materials, such as powdered drink sachets, and transforming them into useful products like chairs and trash bins.

Through this initiative, Malabon and Sentinel Upcycling have provided essential resources to schools, donating chairs and bins to encourage trash segregation and enhance cleanliness.

This collaboration exemplifies a joint effort to empower communities and develop innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.

In 2024, Malabon City also joined forces with other Metro Manila LGUs and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) during the Road to Zero Waste Summit. This event aimed to expand and strengthen initiatives in solid waste management and the circular economy, contributing to a cleaner and greener environment for Malabon and its neighboring cities.
