When Malabon City made headlines around the globe by setting a new Guinness World Records for the “Longest Line of Bowls of Noodles,” showcasing its beloved Pancit Malabon, this huge achievement was not just about breaking records; but a powerful testament to community spirit, volunteerism, and the rich cultural heritage of a city proud of its culinary identity.
Volunteers, heart of the event
At the heart of this record-breaking effort were the 296 volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to make it possible. Among them were 36 volunteers from renowned Pancit Malabon restaurants and 140 students from the City of Malabon University. They were joined by 120 volunteers from local institutions, including Arellano University, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWDD).

Their collective effort transformed a simple idea into a historic event, demonstrating how a shared goal can unite diverse groups within a community.
A volunteer’s journey
One of the standout stories came from Aira Jarlego, a 22-year-old student volunteer. Aira was part of the bowl set-up team, and her journey encapsulated the challenges and triumphs of the volunteers.
“At first, it was very difficult because we were unsure of the flow,” Aira recalled. “But with each practice, we learned the proper way to arrange the bowls, and everything became more organized.”
Her excitement was evident as she reflected on the experience. “We are very happy because even though we’re just students, we were able to contribute to achieving the Guinness World Records.”
Aira’s pride in her city and its traditions resonated, highlighting the significance of the event not just for Malabon, but for all Filipinos.
Preparation process
In the weeks leading up to the event, volunteers engaged in numerous practice sessions. They learned the intricacies of preparing Pancit Malabon, from weighing ingredients to ensuring each bowl was perfectly portioned. This rigorous training reflected their commitment to excellence and the desire to showcase the authentic flavors of Malabon.
The local government’s initiative was not merely about breaking a record. It also aimed to position Malabon as a culinary heritage destination, introducing its unique flavors to a global audience.
Pancit Malabon, a dish steeped in the city’s identity, served as the perfect representative of Filipino culture, promising to boost food tourism and invigorate local businesses.
Celebration of culture and community
The culmination of their efforts was a vibrant display of community unity and cultural pride. As the official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, Sonia Ushirogochi, announced Malabon as the new record holder, cheers erupted from the crowd. They had not only surpassed the previous record of 3,988 bowls but had also celebrated their heritage in a way that would resonate for more years to come.
The city government emphasized the significance of this achievement: “This world record attempt served as a vibrant and powerful way to showcase the significance of Pancit Malabon as a symbol of our rich culture and tradition, as well as the spirit of bayanihan and Filipino pride as a whole.”
Looking ahead
As Malabon City takes great pride in this achievement, the impact of the volunteers’ hard work will echo far beyond the event itself. Their dedication has laid the groundwork for a greater appreciation of Filipino cuisine and culture, ensuring that the legacy of Pancit Malabon will continue to flourish.
In a world smitten by division, the volunteers of Malabon demonstrated unity that made them achieve extraordinary things beyond their expectations.
Their story is a reminder of the power of collective effort, the richness of cultural heritage, and the joy of shared accomplishments. (JMP/PIA-NCR)
