Malacañang affirms commitment to fair trial and legal compliance in Duterte’s ICC Case

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — Former President Rodrigo R. Duterte is scheduled to appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM Hague time (9:00 PM Manila time) in front of Pre-Trial Chamber I.

In the latest press briefing, Undersecretary Claire Castro, Palace Press Officer of the Presidential Communications Office, addressed the Philippine government’s stand on the ICC proceedings concerning former President Duterte’s case on crimes against humanity. She underscored that the Philippine government does not have jurisdiction over the ICC’s actions, particularly after Duterte’s transfer to the ICC.

Castro noted that while the government no longer holds responsibility for the former president once he is under ICC, it is essential on the part of the government to ensure that he receives a fair trial. This obligation stems not from his status as a former president but as a Filipino citizen in accordance with Republic Act No. 9851, or the Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide, and Other Crimes Against Humanity.

In response to whether the ICC could issue a cease order regarding former President Duterte’s assets during the ongoing trial, Castro said that if there is a legal basis for such an order, the government would comply. She emphasized that all actions taken would be grounded in the law, affirming the government’s commitment to adhere to legal requirements. ( GA, PIA CPSD)
