Mambajao opens youth center

CAMIGUIN (PIA) — The local government of Mambajao has established a youth center to provide young people with access to educational, entrepreneurial, and mental health resources. This initiative aims to support the personal and professional growth of young individuals by offering a space for learning, social interaction, and relaxation.

“Open ang atoang youth center sa tanan. Ginganlan ra siya’g youth center to emphasize nga naay espasyo para sa mga kabatan-onan dinhi sa Mambajao,” said Sangunniang Bayan (SB) Member Lander Cutab, during the Deeds Not Words radio program, February 25.

(Our youth center is open to everyone. It is simply called a youth center to emphasize that there is a space for young people here in Mambajao.)

The councilor noted that various activities have already taken place at the youth center, including a demonstration by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) on the Automated Counting Machine (ACM) for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members and youth leaders.

“The session provided valuable insights into the electoral process, equipping participants with the knowledge to ensure fair and informed elections,” Cutab said.

The Arsenal New Era Dance Organisation also hosted a practice and dance class at the center. Cutab said the event provided an opportunity for young dancers to improve their skills and collaborate with others.

Young entrepreneurs likewise had the chance to present their business plans, using the center as a platform to showcase their ideas and commitment to entrepreneurship.

Cutab said the center will continue to host activities that contribute to the holistic development of the youth, providing tools and opportunities for growth.

Other youth programs

Aside from the establishment of the youth center, Cutab highlighted other programs like the Project Lifting Education Through Reading Activities (LETRA), which helps struggling readers, and the Mambajao Youthpreneurship Program (MYP), which teaches youth essential entrepreneurial skills.

He also encouraged youth organizations to register with the Local Youth Development Council, which will allow them to be involved in program planning and decision-making processes.

“We really wanted nga ang mga youth organizations, ilahang mga (that the youth organizations, their) youth presidents, they will have the chance to represent the Local Youth Development Council,” he said.

In addition to educational, entrepreneurial, and mental health initiatives, Cutab pointed out ongoing efforts to develop sports programs that promote tourism and train young athletes. He also stressed the importance of youth consultations in creating solutions that directly benefit the youth sector.

“You should try and try—you just need one dream or at least one nga pangandoy sa imohang kaugalingon (dream for yourself) and try. It might not be your time for now, but soon it will happen for you,” Cutab said. (JDPA/PIA-10/Camiguin)
