Mamburao PDLs make stoves fueled by used cooking oil

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro (PIA) — Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in Mamburao District Jail are creating stove fueled used cooking oil.

Led by Senior Jail Officer II Jayson Paglicawan, at least 30 PDLs were taught on how to make “kalan de-used oil,” a cheaper alternative to the traditional stove that uses liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

“As prices of LPG continue to soar in the market, these burners offer several advantages in terms of cost savings: simple installation, easy-to-use, environmentally sustainable, safe, and convenient,” Paglicawan said.

Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) MIMAROPA Information Officer Joefrie Anglo added that kalan de-used oil may be built using locally sourced materials that can reduce its production cost and make it more affordable.

As of January 27, five units of kalan de-used oil were sold through the support of BJMP personnel and other stakeholders, said Anglo.

“All the proceeds will go directly po sa skills workers at sa kanilang kooperatiba na namamahala po sa materyales, produksyon at pondo,” he said.

Anglo highlighted that skills training empowers PDLs to support their families better when their serving time ends.

“Ang pinakamaganda po dito, mabibitbit nila sa paglaya yung kasanayan at pwede nilang gawing panimula para hindi na sila [bumalik] sa mga ilegal na aktibidad at mabawasan yung cases of reoffending kung saan bumabalik din sila ng kulungan at nakakadagdag sa congestion,” he added.

(An advantage of this is that they will carry the skills with them when they finish their serving time in jail, and they can use it to start over so they will not return from doing illegal activities and lessen the chances of reoffending, which can contribute to jail congestion.)

The BJMP continues to provide various livelihood skills training to PDLs to keep boredom at bay while in jail facilities and prepare them for community reintegration. (DSG/PIA MIMAROPA – Occidental Mindoro/Story and photos from BJMP MIMAROPA)
