MANILA, (PIA) — The Manila City Jail Male Dormitory is providing its persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) with valuable and marketable skills to help them secure employment upon their release from detention, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) announced.
As part of the PDL skills development program, the jail has set up a series of comprehensive lectures and hands-on training sessions, including instruction on tile-setting.
“The skills acquired through this training will open up opportunities for the PDLs to secure employment in the construction industry upon their release. With a TESDA certification, they will be well-prepared to offer quality workmanship and contribute meaningfully to the workforce,” the BJMP said.
In addition to the construction skills training, the jail has also organized a cooking enhancement session focused on the preparation of squash fritters. This initiative aims to equip the PDLs with valuable culinary skills that can serve as a sustainable source of income while promoting healthy eating habits.
During the session, the Welfare and Development Section personnel of the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory provided step-by-step instructions on making squash fritters, highlighting the nutritional benefits of the dish.
“The training provided the PDLs with practical skills that can be used to generate income in the future. Additionally, it encouraged them to think about the nutritional benefits they can offer to potential customers, thereby promoting health and wellness within the community,” the BJMP said.
The jail’s efforts align with the goals of National Nutrition Month to improve overall health and well-being.
By equipping its inmates with income-generating skills, the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory is taking a proactive approach to helping PDLs transition back into society and become productive members of the community. (JCP/PIA-NCR)
