Mapping Romblon marble’s future

ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) MIMAROPA, in partnership with the University of the Philippines Diliman, is finalizing the Romblon Marble Industry Roadmap—a 10-year strategic plan aimed to strengthen and expand the province’s marble industry.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., a native of Romblon, led the discussions alongside representatives from various sectors and other stakeholders during a review session on April 7 on the draft roadmap, which has been in development since 2024

One of the roadmap’s primary objectives is the establishment of the Marble Industry Strategy Council, which will oversee the industry’s development and ensure its efficient management.

The plan also includes boosting the local market, expanding distribution to regional, national, and international markets, enhancing marble craft designs, and providing skills training for workers to improve product quality.

Although Romblon is well known for its high-quality marble, the industry has yet to reach its full potential, according to Solidum. He emphasized that while marble is deeply embedded in the cultural identity of Romblon, a clear direction and government support are needed to drive its growth.

“There is still much work to be done, but I believe collaboration among all stakeholders is essential. The creation of an industry council will play a crucial role in managing and implementing this roadmap,” Solidum told PIA Romblon.

The review session was also attended by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in marble processing and craftsmanship. Many expressed their gratitude to DOST and UP Diliman for providing technical assistance to improve their products.

Once finalized, the roadmap will be turned over to the municipal and provincial governments to establish policies and implement strategies.

Meanwhile, Solidum stressed the importance of ensuring high product quality, providing adequate training for workers, and closely monitoring the export of marble materials from Romblon.

As the Marble Capital of the Philippines, Romblon is known for its world-class, high-grade marble, comparable to Italy’s Carrara Marble. Its marble products are exported to countries such as Japan, China, and the United States.

Through the Romblon Marble Industry Roadmap, DOST, UP Diliman, and stakeholders hope to revitalize and make Romblon’s marble industry more globally competitive in the years to come. (PJF/PIA MIMAROPA-Romblon)
