The Marang Marang Women’s Association (MMWA) in Isabela City de Basilan shines not only in the Philippines but in the ASEAN region as it received the 2025 ASEAN Community-Based Tourism Award.
This distinguished recognition was presented during the ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards (ATSA) ceremony on January 20, 2025, in Johor Bahru, Malaysia and received by Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman. The MMWA’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices positions them as exemplary stewards of their community and the environment, celebrating their dedication to preserving cultural heritage while fostering socio-economic development.
The Rise of the Marang Marang Women’s Association
Formed in 2022 under the leadership of the late Punong Barangay Jimnu Hammad, the MMWA comprises predominantly Sama Banguingui and Bajau women, two Indigenous groups rich in cultural heritage. The association thrives on strong collaboration with the local government, enhancing their capabilities to manage the Marang Marang Floating Cottages and Mangrove Sanctuary. With 120 active members led by President Mayra Abbas, the MMWA has become a vibrant force in their community, demonstrating that women can indeed be powerful agents of change.

To support their initiatives, the local government of Isabela City de Basilan, under Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, has provided resources and training to enhance the skills necessary for the management of tourism offerings.
Additionally, the Department of Tourism (DOT) – Region IX, under the leadership of former Regional Director Myra Paz Abubakar and RD Krisma Rodriguez, has supported the MMWA through training and promotional efforts.
Other government agencies, such as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), along with non-government partners, have also extended their support to align with the MMWA’s programs.
Culinary Heritage as a Tourist Attraction
One of the most alluring aspects of the Marang Marang experience is its culinary offerings. The women of the MMWA utilize heirloom techniques passed down through generations to prepare delicious Moro dishes, using fresh seafood sourced from the barangay. Their culinary skills not only provide sustenance to the community but also create meaningful experiences for visitors, introducing them to the rich flavors and traditions of the Sama Banguingui and Bajau cultures.
Preserving Nature and Culture
The MMWA is committed to sustainability, recognizing that their livelihoods are intricately connected to the mangrove ecosystem. The women take an active role in protecting these vital resources, ensuring that they are used responsibly so that future generations can continue to benefit from their lush environment.
Changing Perceptions
Historically marginalized, the Sama Banguingui and Bajau people have often faced negative stereotypes. The MMWA is actively dismantling these misconceptions through the power of tourism. By showcasing their rich culture through culinary experiences, mat weaving, and vibrant dances like igal, they are altering the narrative surrounding their communities while fostering inclusivity and understanding.
Narratives and Experiences
The association aims to leave a profound impact on visitors by sharing the stories behind their traditions. From the significance of their food to the intricate patterns woven into their mats, each aspect of the Marang Marang experience is designed to engage and educate guests, breaking down cultural barriers and fostering respect.
