MANILA, (PIA) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. commemorated the 161st birth anniversary of national hero Andres Bonifacio on Saturday, urging Filipinos to be one in continuing the revolutionary leader’s fight against societal challenges.
In a national message, Marcos praised Bonifacio as the “Supremo of the Katipunan” who emerged from humble beginnings to ignite the Philippine Revolution against colonial oppression.
“Gat Andres may have been long gone, but his fight carries on,” Marcos said, emphasizing the hero’s enduring legacy of courage and national liberation.
The president called on Filipinos to honor Bonifacio’s memory by working to address contemporary challenges, including hunger, corruption, and criminality.
He stressed the importance of “patriotism, discipline, and love for one another” in building what he termed a “Bagong Pilipinas” or New Philippines.
Marcos highlighted Bonifacio’s role in awakening nationalist consciousness and uniting Filipinos in their struggle for independence.
He described the revolutionary leader as a hero who inspired his fellow Filipinos to rise against tyranny and break the chains of oppression.
The commemorative message serves as an annual reminder of the country’s revolutionary history and the ongoing mission of nation-building, drawing inspiration from one of the Philippines’ most celebrated national heroes. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
