MANILA (PIA) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, June 12, led the Philippines in celebrating its 126th Independence Day, urging Filipinos to work towards a “Bagong Pilipinas” (New Philippines).

In his message, Marcos emphasized the need to build a brighter future for the nation.

“Let us dedicate ourselves to the challenging but rewarding task of realizing the full potential of the Filipinos and building a Bagong Pilipinas – one that truly embodies the ideals of a just, progressive, and independent Republic,” he said.

The President led two events–a simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument in Luneta Park, followed by the Araw ng Kalayaan Grand Parade at the Quirino Grandstand.

The simultaneous raising of the Philippine flag was also held at the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, symbolizing the birth of the Philippines as a sovereign nation; the Barasoain Church Historical Landmark in Bulacan; the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City; the Mausoleo de los Veteranos dela Revolucion in Manila; and Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City.

Similar flag-raising activities were also conducted at the same time in various government agencies and local government units.

During the event, the President, his Cabinet, and other officials sang the Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines) hymn and recited the Bagong Pilipinas pledge.

Marcos also highlighted the enduring spirit of freedom among ordinary Filipinos who overcome daily challenges.

“While the times may be different, our struggles remain the same. We continue to witness the true spirit of freedom in every Filipino who fights fairly in their day-to-day lives,” he said.

The chief executive praised Filipino farmers, fishers, teachers, soldiers, and others for their resilience and dedication. Marcos stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of past generations and continuing the fight for freedom.

Throughout the day, Marcos attended various events, including a grand parade from the Cultural Center of the Philippines grounds to Roxas Boulevard up to the Burnham Green across the Quirino Grandstand. The celebration culminated in a free concert.

The festivities also included a job fair offering over 7,000 positions and a diplomatic reception hosted by the President in Malañang.
