The project is under the DA-BFAR’s Legislated Hatcheries Program to meet local requirements for aquaculture seed stocks, reduce dependence on imported fry, and augment the production of the aquaculture sector.
Second District of Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny T. Pimentel also provided support and helped the LGU in making this dream project a reality with an estimated facility investment of about P24 million that aim to breed crabs, shrimp, and pompano.
The project is expected to boost Hinatuan’s aquaculture production, employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.
Municipal Tourism and Information Officer designate Gemma S. Millan said that the facility in Hinatuan will be managed by DA-BFAR Caraga during the first two years of operation, while also providing technical training to the local government unit that will eventually take full responsibility upon its transfer.
“The key agencies are currently preparing for the conduct of technical skills through training and capacity building to local government personnel in preparation for the turnover of the facility , as well as its operation. With this, the local government unit will be fully responsible for the management of the facility,” Millan explained.
The new source of fry within the province will offer several benefits for the local aquaculture community such as lower cost of fry and operating capital for fish farmers, the emergence of more nurseries and grow-out areas, and better revenue to the local government unit, including employment opportunities for the locals.
Second District of Surigao del Sur Congressional Representative Johnny T. Pimentel also provided support and helped the LGU in making this dream project a reality.
The hatchery site is approximately 3 kilometers away from the national highway. It is a beachfront property, dominated by coconut trees, and has a low-lying coral-line flat that separates from the open sea.
