DAVAO ORIENTAL (PIA) — Davao Oriental is on the way to a transformative milestone as the long-awaited construction of Basic Airport Facilities at the Mati Airport is set to begin next week.
This landmark development, valued at P87.9 million, is expected to enhance the province’s connectivity and unlock new economic and tourism opportunities.
The announcement was made last January 14, 2025, during a significant meeting between Governor Niño Uy, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Project Officer Engr. Santy Zapata, and representatives from contractor O.G. Santos Construction-Rakki Corporation.
Clearing operations are scheduled to start in the coming days, with full construction expected to kick off before the end of January 2025.
Davao Oriental Governor Niño Sotero Uy has expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its significance in driving tourism and attracting business investments to Davao Oriental.
“This airport will provide better access for businesses looking to invest in the province,” Gov. Uy said.
Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) commended the Provincial Government for its efficient land acquisition process, which ensured the project could proceed smoothly.
DOTr Project Officer Engr. Santy Zapata has confirmed plans to secure additional funding for the airport’s future phases, which will further enhance its infrastructure and capacity.
Mati Airport facilities are expected to transform the region, provide improved accessibility for tourists and investors while strengthening Davao Oriental’s role in the regional economy.
