Mayor Jeannie enhances cleanup efforts for a healthier Malabon post-rains

MANILA, (PIA) — Mayor Jeannie Sandoval has directed city personnel to intensify cleanup initiatives across Malabon following heavy rains and high tides that affected the area in August and early September. The mayor emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the city’s 21 barangays to ensure the health and safety of its residents.

Let’s work together to keep Malabon clean and healthy. We’ve ensured that our staff is deployed to areas needing assistance with waste removal due to the recent rains in Metro Manila,” Mayor Jeannie said. “Our cleanup operations are ongoing in various locations, including main roads and waterways. I urge everyone to cooperate to facilitate our efforts, as safety from flooding and rain is paramount.”

In response to reports of waste accumulation on city streets, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) is collaborating with barangay officials to coordinate local cleanup efforts. CENRO personnel are deployed daily to collect trash from main roads, alleys, and waterways.

Following a cease and desist order issued to Metrowaste Solid Waste Management Corporation (MSWMC) for reportedly improper use of the Malabon transfer station, the contractor has removed significant stockpiles of garbage. However, issues concerning the contractor’s garbage hauling operations led to concerns about waste management in the city.

The order halted the contractor’s use of the transfer facility, but collection operations by MSWMC reportedly faced delays.

In light of these challenges, CENRO has engaged an emergency collection contractor to assist with garbage hauling, as Mayor Jeannie mandated daily cleanup operations. Garbage trucks and collectors are now making approximately 18 trips per day to gather waste across the city.

CENRO reiterated its commitment to preventing waste from entering waterways to mitigate flooding risks. The City Engineering Department is also conducting declogging operations in local waterways as part of broader flood mitigation measures. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is providing additional support for the city’s garbage collection efforts.

City Administrator Dr. Alexander Rosete urged residents to report garbage accumulation in roads and alleys to the city government via TXT MJS at 0917-689-8657.

It is also the responsibility of Malabueños to ensure proper waste disposal to maintain cleanliness. Our staff is ready to provide assistance during emergencies. We hope for continued collaboration between residents and the government,” Dr. Rosete said.

The city government’s enhanced cleanup efforts aim to create a safer and healthier environment for all Malabueños in the wake of recent weather challenges. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
