QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — In a bid to raise awareness of metrology among students, the Department of Science and Technology-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) hosted a tech forum titled “BEYOND MEASURE: The Basics of Metrology” on September 19, 2024, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum Tent.
The event began with Science Research Specialist II Janesky O. Esplana asking attendees about their familiarity with metrology. Few hands were raised, highlighting a general lack of awareness about the field, which is often confused with meteorology.
DOST-ITDI Director Dr. Annabelle V. Briones opened the forum by emphasizing the importance of accurate measurements in achieving reliable results in technology development, innovative research, and real-world problem-solving. She envisioned the forum as an opportunity for students to consider metrology as a viable career path within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The main presentation was delivered by Dr. Maryness I. Salazar, Supervising Science Research Specialist at the DOST-ITDI National Metrology Division. She described metrology as foundational to scientific accuracy and technological progress, affecting daily life through various measurements.
Dr. Salazar provided insights into metrology’s history, core concepts, and applications across sectors such as healthcare, automotive, and energy.
Participants engaged in hands-on activities and interactive games, designed to provide a vibrant and innovative experience with metrology. Dr. Janet F. Quizon, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Deputy Director for Administrative and Technical Services, concluded the forum by highlighting that metrology is essential across all scientific and engineering disciplines.
“I hope you have been inspired by the expertise shared today and gained a new understanding of how metrology intersects with your studies and future careers,” Dr. Quizon said.
This forum was part of the 2nd National Youth Science, Technology, and Innovation Festival (NYSTIF), which aims to enhance youth appreciation for science and technology. The festival, themed “STEM VIBE: Engaging the Youth in Providing Solutions and Opening Opportunities,” focuses on inspiring students to explore careers in STEM.
The National Metrology Laboratory of the Philippines, operating under the DOST-ITDI, plays a crucial role in establishing and maintaining national measurement standards. It also connects the country to the global metrology community as an Associate State of the General Conference on Weights and Measures.
