MARAWI CITY (PIA) — A total of 335 solar-powered street lights will be installed across various shelters in Marawi City and the municipality of Saguiaran, while a healthcare docking station will be built along the lakeshore in Brgy. Tuca to enhance emergency response and healthcare services.
This was after the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development (MHSD) and the Project Management Office of the Marawi Rehabilitation Program (MRP) held groundbreaking ceremonies on January 24, 2025 to start implementing the project.
The solar street light project costs P21.74 million, and the healthcare docking station has a P30.95 million budget. Al Fahad Builders and Enterprises will construct the docking station, while Al Hussein Construction will oversee the installation of the streetlights.
MHSD Minister Hamid Aminoddin D. Barra said the solar street lights would help provide much-needed safety and security in IDP shelters. He also expressed hope that, along with the payout from the Marawi Compensation Board, these efforts would encourage more displaced families to return to their homes.
“Several IDPs were left across different housing and shelter projects. These resettlements will be lit up by these solar street lights provided by our Chief Minister Ahod B. Ebrahim, Alhamdulillah!,” he said.
The solar street lights, which will be installed at various shelters in both Marawi City and Saguiaran, are expected to reduce the risk of crime and accidents, thereby promoting a safer environment for IDP families. The lights will use monocrystalline technology, which is more efficient than polycrystalline panels, offering 18 to 20 percent better performance and a lifespan of approximately five years. Maintenance will be minimal, consisting of cleaning and dusting, according to MHSD Electrical Engineer Jaaber Daud Panda.
In Marawi City, solar street lights will be installed at Darussalam Village (25 units), Hadiya Village (25 units), Hijrah Village (25 units), Boganga Temporary Shelter (25 units), Miphaga Kapyanan Shelter (25 units), and Miphaga Bahay Pag-Asa Shelters (25 units).
Moreover, 50 units will be installed at the Pamayandeg Ranao Residences in Kilala and Miphantao-Gadongan, 18 in Patani Temporary Shelter, 17 in CRS Sagonsongan and CRS Rorogagus Shelters, and 25 each at Samaritan Shelter in Brgy. Lumbac Toros and Pagalamatan Shelter in Brgy. Pagalamatan, both located in the municipality of Saguiaran.
The healthcare docking station, meanwhile, will be strategically located along the lakeshore, to serve as a critical hub for emergency medical services and healthcare needs directly benefiting IDPs in lakeshore communities.
The groundbreaking ceremonies were also attended by Member of the Parliament and MRP-PMO Program Manager Said M. Shiek, MHSD-Lanao del Sur Provincial Director Benjamin D. Alangca, representatives from the Office of BARMM Deputy Chief Minister Aleem Ali Solaiman, and community leaders.
These projects are part of the BARMM Government’s effort to support the rehabilitation and recovery of Marawi and surrounding areas, with continued emphasis on improving living conditions for displaced residents and rebuilding the communities. (MHSD-BARMM/PIA-10 Lanao del Sur)
