Mining operators take center stage in responsible mining exhibit

Several mining operators in Eastern Visayas showcased their responsible mining practices through a mining exhibit at Robinsons Place Tacloban on June 19.

It also educates the public about minerals’ essential role in regional development and includes a press conference to clarify concerns about mining.

The booths showcased their social development management program, environmental protection and enhancement programs, and the mining forest program.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of Eastern Visayas, in partnership with the Alliance of Responsible Miners of Region 8 (ARMOR-8), organized the event at the Robinsons Place Tacloban.

“Mining is not only for economic gains but also for environmental protection, social development, and cultural enhancement,” Engr. Glenn Marcelo C. Noble, the regional director of MGB, underscored.

Mining operators’ best practices

Nickel Asia Corporation, a holding company of Hinatuan Mining Corporation-Manicani Nickel Project (HMC), won the first Asian mineral awards in 2017.

This recognition was a proud moment for affiliated companies like the HMC group. The awards focus on sustainability and responsible mining practices across Southeast Asia.

“Our goal aligns with Nickel Asia Corporation’s directives, centered around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles,” said Philipp D. Ines, the resident mining manager in HMC.

During their mining operation in Manicani, Eastern Samar, HMC extracted nickel ore to produce nickel metal, which is used to strengthen steel and make it rust-resistant.

In addition, Verum Terra Geoscience Inc., a mining operator based in Eastern Samar, highlighted progressive rehabilitation as one of their responsible mining practices.

This initiative restores deforested areas and lands affected by mining activities by replanting with native species and maintaining ongoing upkeep.

Likewise, Techiron Resources Inc. has committed to supporting livelihoods by developing potential opportunities shared with neighboring barangays after mining operations.

Since 2022, the company has collaborated on food processing and barangay pharmacy programs with 48 women benefactors in the barangays of Canawayon and Casuguran in Eastern Samar.

Concerted efforts

“The Alliance of Responsible Miners of Region 8 (ARMOR-8) and its member companies are demonstrating best mining practices in environmental protection, waste and mines management, and community empowerment in collaboration with government agencies, ensuring compliance and responsibility,” said Engr. Neone P. Asilom, president of ARMOR-8.

This year’s theme is “Mining Matters: Unearthing the Foundation of Modern Society.”

Despite some negative perceptions about mining, it plays a crucial role in our region’s growth. By focusing on responsible practices that balance economic growth, protect the environment, and benefit society, mining can drive progress while preserving our resources and communities for future generations.
