BALINGASAG, Misamis Oriental (PIA)–-The local government of Balingasag recently unveiled a reformatory and treatment center called Balay Silangan, designed to help former drug users who wish to reintegrate into the community.
Mayor Alexis Quina of Balingasag town, who led the center’s inauguration, said solving drug-related issues is a global concern requiring progressive focus.
He wants to reduce drug cases while acknowledging the challenging task of accommodating and managing former drug users and pushers in the rehabilitation center.
“We face another challenge ahead. I hope the Sangguniang Bayan shares our mindset in collectively helping former drug users during their recovery at the reformatory center. If the government’s support for their livelihood is lacking, that becomes the primary challenge. We need to explore alternative solutions,” Quina said.
The mayor said he trusts the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), highlighting its crucial role in equipping individuals undergoing recovery inside the facility with valuable technical and vocational skills.
“TESDA steps up to this challenge by equipping individuals with legal methods for generating income, empowering them to sustain a living,” he said.
Despite administration challenges, the mayor said he remains optimistic about the success of their efforts. He concluded the unveiling rites by thanking the dedicated employees whose efforts made Balay Silangan a reality.
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Northern Mindanao Regional Director Emerson Margate; Department of Health-Center of Health Development Regional Director Ellenita HMV Gamolo; Balingasag Police Station chief Major Arnold Gaabucayan, members of Sangguniang Bayan, and municipal employees attended the opening rites.
