OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental (PIA) — The Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental, led by Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, recently hosted the Health Providers Summit as part of the province’s 95th anniversary celebrations, honoring the invaluable contributions of barangay health workers (BHWs) and barangay nutrition scholars (BNS).

“Today, we gather not just for a conference but to celebrate your unwavering commitment to public health. You have served with heart and dedication, reaching even the most remote and vulnerable communities. This summit is a moment to honor your contributions and, more importantly, to look ahead as we continue working toward a healthier future for all,” said Oaminal.

The governor also recognized the critical role that barangay health workers and nutrition scholars have played, especially during the pandemic. He emphasized that their efforts have been key to the province’s resilience, helping achieve significant milestones in vaccination, child nutrition, maternal care, and overall community health.

“The pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of our healthcare system. But it also revealed the indispensable role of primary healthcare workers like you. Without your dedication, our response would have been much weaker. You have been the backbone of our health efforts, tirelessly working despite challenges and limited resources. You are the unsung heroes of our province,” Oaminal said.

He assured attendees that his administration remains committed to providing more support, training, and resources to health workers, strengthening the healthcare system for future generations.

“As your governor, I am committed to ensuring that you receive the recognition and support you deserve. Together, we will continue to build on our progress and create a brighter, healthier future for every Misamisnon,” he added.

Oaminal, along with special guests Sen. Manuel “Lito” Lapid and former Pangasinan Gov. Mark Lapid, led the tribute to these frontline heroes who have worked relentlessly, particularly during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lapid’s support for barangay health workers

Sen. Lapid, a long-time advocate for health workers, also addressed the attendees, expressing his heartfelt gratitude for their courage and service, particularly during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis.

“I want to personally thank each one of you—our Barangay Health Workers—for your courage and service. You were at the frontlines, risking your lives to protect our communities. Your role is crucial to the health of our barangays. Like our barangay tanods and officials, you are permanent pillars of public service in our local communities,” Sen. Lapid said.

He also shared his commitment to advancing legislation that will further protect and support BHWs. He announced the introduction of Senate Bill No. 2838, the Magna Carta for barangay health workers, which aims to provide better benefits, protection, and recognition for their services.

“I will continue to push for this bill to ensure that you receive the benefits and recognition you truly deserve,” Sen. Lapid said. He also pledged to allocate an additional P100 million to support the construction of the Asenso Misamis Occidental Medical Center, strengthening the province’s healthcare infrastructure.

Celebrating health excellence and community impact

A lively Bini Dance Showdown marked the summit, with participants from different LGUs showcasing their talent and unity. Special prizes were awarded to the winners, with P100,000 from Mark Lapid allocated to the dance contest.

The top three winners were Ozamiz City, with a cash prize of P144,000, Tudela, with a prize of P113,000, and Tangub City, with a prize of P63,000. Other LGUs also received a consolation prize worth P20,000.

The dance contest was not only a fun highlight but also a celebration of teamwork and community spirit that have fueled Misamis Occidental’s successful health initiatives.

Oaminal closed the summit with a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Holly Tago, Provincial Health Officer, and the entire Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) team for their tireless efforts in organizing the event. He also extended his deep gratitude to all health workers—doctors, nurses, midwives, BHWs, BNS, and other healthcare professionals—for their continued service to the province.

“Thank you for your hard work, your sacrifices, and your unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our province. Together, we will continue to work hand in hand to ensure that every child, every family, and every community in Misamis Occidental thrives,” Oaminal said.

As Misamis Occidental moves forward, the provincial government remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening public health systems and empowering the frontline heroes who continue to make a profound impact on the lives of its people. (PGMO/PIA-10/Misamis Occidental)
