MISAMIS ORIENTAL (PIA) — Gov. Peter M. Unabia emphasized the importance of reflecting on the patriotism, bravery, and self-confidence of the Philippine heroes during the 126th Independence Day celebration held at the Capitol Grounds on June 12.

He said replicating these values would help open doors for infinite possibilities.

“The meaning of this day lies in our confidence in ourselves and in our ability to take hold of our own future. If we dare as our forefather did in 1898, there is no difficulty we cannot resolve, no aim we cannot reach, and no hope we cannot achieve,” he said in front of Capitol employees, national government agencies, local government units, academe and the private sector who witnessed the commemoration ceremony.

As people celebrated this significant event, Unabia urged them to remember and appreciate those who sacrificed for the country. He emphasized treasuring their memories and acknowledging their contributions to the nation’s democracy. The Independence Day celebration carried the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan.”

Vice Gov. Jeremy Jonahmar Pelaez, for his part, encouraged everyone to remember the lessons of history and the significance of freedom.

“Let us recommit ourselves to the principles of democracy, justice, and equality. Let us work together to create a future where our country continues to shine as a beacon of hope and resilience. A future where no one is left behind. Let us celebrate with joy and pride. Let us honor our past, embrace our present, and look forward to a future that is as bright and boundless as our aspiration,” he said.

Furthermore, the vice governor shared that this year’s Independence Day theme encapsulates the essence of being a Filipino, further emphasizing the patriotic acts of the heroes who fought for independence, which every Filipino has enjoyed to this day.

“Their courage and determination paved the way for the liberties that we enjoy today, allowing us to stand proud and free,” he said.
