MMDA files complaint against SUV driver for illegal U-turn on EDSA

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has lodged a formal complaint with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) against an SUV driver who executed an illegal and dangerous U-turn at the EDSA/Aurora tunnel southbound on Tuesday morning.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30 a.m., was captured by MMDA CCTV cameras and subsequently went viral on the agency’s official Facebook page.

The driver of the black SUV was seen making the reckless maneuver and then speeding off in the opposite direction, raising concerns about road safety.

In response to the MMDA’s complaint, the LTO issued a show cause order to the registered owner of the vehicle, requiring him to appear before the LTO on Monday, October 14.

The driver has also been directed to provide an explanation as to why he should not face administrative charges for reckless driving and obstruction of traffic.

If found guilty, the driver could face penalties including suspension or revocation of his driver’s license,” an LTO spokesperson stated.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes emphasized the seriousness of the violation in his letter to LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II.

Artes called for appropriate sanctions, citing the driver’s blatant disregard for traffic laws and the potential danger posed to other motorists and passengers.

In wanton disregard of standard and safe operation of a motor vehicle, the driver maneuvered the vehicle into the opposite lane, risking not just the safety of other motorists but also that of the occupants of the SUV,” Artes wrote in the complaint.

He further criticized the driver’s apparent sense of entitlement, noting, “After executing the U-turn, he drove off nonchalantly as if he had not committed an egregious traffic violation. This may even be seen as criminal negligence due to a clear breach of basic driving decorum.”

The MMDA continues to urge motorists to adhere to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users. (GLG/PIA-NCR)
