SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — Some underprivileged individuals benefited from a social outreach program dubbed “Magic of Rotary” in San Agustin Elementary School, here on July 6.
Among the 270 beneficiaries were 100 senior citizens, 100 grade schoolers, 30 pregnant and nursing mothers, 30 barangay health workers, and 10 barangay tanods.
The outreach program was spearheaded by the Rotary Club Metro of San Fernando, in partnership with Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC), Department of Health-Center For Health and Development 1, and Philippine Dental Association.
In line with Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self,” the program reflects the contributions that the club and its members continue to make throughout the community.
The 7-in-1 community project is in line with the organization’s seven areas of focus namely care for environment; maternal and child health; disease prevention and treatment; water sanitation, and hygiene; basic education and literacy; community economic development; and peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
Rotary Club Metro San Fernando President, Cheryl Pee-Phua expressed delight at being able to provide social services to the underprivileged constituents of the barangay.
“This outreach program by our club demonstrates our commitment to improving the health and well-being of communities in need. These services we offered will contribute to disease prevention and control, and ultimately, enhance the overall health of our Kababayans,” Pee-Phua explained.
Moreover, Pee-Phua emphasized the importance of identifying communities in need of such interventions and appreciated the support from the community.
“We assure our fellows that we continue reaching them out especially to those underprivileged as we extend our helping hands through this small act of kindness,” she said.
The outreach program consisted of various services including eye tests with free glasses provided, free hygiene kits and haircuts for senior citizens, dental check-ups and dental kits distribution for adults and kids.
During the activity, the PDA had a lecture on proper ways of brushing teeth and hand washing for the kids while DOH and ITRMC conducted a lecture on health tips for pregnant and nursing mothers, and extending dental services, among others.
In addition, pregnant and nursing mothers received free maternal kits, while flashlights and iñabel towelettes were given to barangay tanods.
Lilia Oliva, a senior citizen beneficiary, expressed her appreciation to the Rotary Club for their efforts in providing free services and treatment for her and fellow community members.
“As one of the beneficiaries of eyeglasses, I am beyond blessed for this early gift for me to see things clearly,” said Oliva. (MJTAB/KJCR, PIA La Union)
