ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — More than 2,700 residents from Maayon town and other nearby municipalities converge for the five-day “Bayani Challenge” to provide essential services in the community.
In collaboration with the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation Inc., the Maayon municipal government successfully concluded this year’s Bayani Challenge held from Aug. 8 to 12, 2024.
The nationwide event became a venue for the residents to unite in the mission of promoting the spirit of heroism and implementing various community improvements in the barangays of Canapian, Maalan, Tapulang, Guinbialan, and Balighot in Maayon town.
The volunteers from various organizations engage in tree growing activity, refurbishment of daycare and healthcare centers, feeding programs, Sipag football clinic, health awareness campaigns, free haircut services, children recreational activities under Paraisong Pambata, distribution of school supplies, and initiatives in community food farming.
Maayon town mayor Raymond Malapajo expressed his deep appreciation to all the participants, highlighting the importance of their contribution and affirming his continued support for such initiatives.
Punong barangay of Brgy. Balighot Malady Calinao said the volunteers conducted feeding programs, provided free haircuts, and improved their daycare classroom.
“The Bayani Challenge greatly benefited our barangay, especially our elementary pupils, who were provided with school supplies and nutritious meals through the feeding program,” Calinao added.
She also mentioned that through the Bayani Challenge, they were able to create community gardens, as they gather the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries, Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), and the parents of the daycare student, who work alongside the barangay officials in planting vegetables.
Maayon town information officer and Gawad Kalinga focal person Ronjel Delfin noted that the activity aims to ignite the spirit of volunteerism to impact and unite the community positively.
“We highlight the community food farming to help establish community gardens in the barangays and to help mitigate food security problem of the residents due to the high cost of the basic commodities,” Delfin added.
He expressed that the Bayani Challenge is a common ground for all types of people to help the less fortunate and develop communities. *AGP/PLF/PIA Capiz
